I don’t know why, but I feel as if T.H. White didn’t believe what he was writing about, as if his tongue was pressed to his cheek through every scene, like Alice down the rabbit hole told by an adult who thinks the whole thing nonsense. At other points the story seemed hijacked by White’s didactic interpolations of the origins of the earth according to the theory of evolution. Was he countering Christian Deism in the days of King Arthur?
The story was good, but could have been great.
